Description

Premium Red Williams Pear:

The Fruit:

It is a cultivar of the species “Pyrus communis”, commonly known as the “European Pear”. This Williams pear is considered a summer pear, not as tolerant of cold as some varieties. Williams are aromatic pears, and have what many consider the definitive “pear flavor”. Colours of the pear vary from green when unripe, to yellow (ripe) and red.

The Story:

In Britain, in 1799 James Carter imported several Williams trees into the United States. Red Bartletts or Williams are very similar to the traditional Williams, aside from ripening to a reddish colour rather than yellow colour. The pear’s full name is Williams’ Bon Chretien, or Williams’ good Christian. A nurseryman named Williams later acquired the variety, and after introducing it to the rest of England, the pear became known as the Williams Pear. However, the pear’s full name is Williams’ Bon Chretien, or “Williams’ good Christian.Best when picked with the internal pressure of the pear is between 18 psi and 16 psi, the pear should still be green and relatively hard when picked. Optimum conditions for ripening are in dry shady areas, and ripening usually takes 7 to 10 days from when the pear was picked. As the pear ripens the color will slowly change to a soft yellow and the pear will soften. Commercially produced pears are normally picked and shipped to the stores while green.

The Medicine:

“Williams pears are a good source of fiber. Dietary fiber can help prevent constipation, making one’s bowel movement easier to manage. Fiber can also scrape cholesterol out of the arteries and blood vessels. One Williams pear contains 5 grams of dietary fiber. The daily recommended dietary fiber intake for men and women are 38 grams and 25 grams, respectively.Williams pears contain many antioxidants like vitamin C and chlorogenic acid. Antioxidants seek and neutralise typical cell-harming free radicals that can destroy cells or turn them into cancer.

The Judges said:

-” A bright, clear spirit. On the nose, poached pears with a whole vanilla stick. On the palate, a warm rounded heat quickly diminishes and leaves behind a ripe red, sweetened pear.”

-” Fragrant pear notes on the nose underpinned with alcohol heat. A fierce alcohol burn is making the subtle fruit notes. This would possibly benefit from aging to mellow the heat and unify the flavours.”

-” Lots of ripe pear aromas with hints of caramel. The initial fruity flavours quickly disappear, however, and we were left with a harsh raw alcohol burn. We thought the over all effect was rather clumsy.”

-” An appealing eau-de-vie nose, not resonantly Williams pear, but very pleasing. A touch fiery on the palate, but with appealing pear and pepper notes, the anticipated resinous notes and vanilla sweetness on the finish. We feel this is a soundly made pear brandy: a pleasing sip with a warming finish.”
