Palinka and Grappa

By Tamás Verdes on September 7, 2018

Grappa is an Italian alcoholic drink, with Italy producing over forty million bottles every year. The name Grappa is protected by the EU since 1989. Meaning, only drinks produced and sourced in Italy can bear the name. The same applies to Palinka too.

The main ingredient in Grappa is called pomace. Pomace is a mixture of seeds, grape skins, and stalks that are usually the “by-products” of wine production. Then the ingredients undergo another distillation process, which helps to extract the flavour that remained in the pomace, and then all the waste is removed.

After that, it is aged in casks to make the so called yellow grappa, or it is poured into bottles immediately to get white grappa. There are over a hundred different makers of Grappa. The most famous ones are Castellari Bergaglio and Rovero.

The main difference between Palinka and Grappa

Unlike Palinka, Grappa is usually served at the end of a delicious meal. You can either take it as an espresso or drink it in shots. Additionally, Grappa earned its name as ‘healthy water’ since it works well as a digestif. Moreover, Grappa has a higher alcohol per volume compared to wine. Wine typically has 16% alcohol as compared to Grappa that has an average of 30 to 60%.  The best part of Grappa is its aroma. Sure, you can drink it straight, but that doesn’t limit you to such. You can get creative with it, just like with Palinka.

More and more people become fond of this drink, since it offers something unique due to its smooth taste. As of now, this beverage is widely used in cocktails.

Why is Palinka the new Grappa?

As from the description above, more and more people are using Grappa in cocktails. Therefore, it gets easy to find Grappa cocktails in most pubs. The situation is the same for Palinka as well. More to that, just like Palinka, Grappa has a unique taste, making every sip worthwhile. Get yourself a sip of this elegant cocktail, and you will never regret.
